Cartoon conceptualization of ChIMP (channel inactivation induced by membrane tethering an associated protein), a new method to generate calcium channel blockers discovered by the Colecraft lab. Diverse cytosolic proteins (represented by the chimp) that bind intracellular loops of voltage-dependent calcium channel pore-forming subunits can be converted to calcium channel blockers by tethering them to the plasma membrane. The method provides a general approach to develop novel genetically encoded calcium channel blockers.
